Boyal Advances to NCAA Championships for Cal Poly Cross Country

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly's Swarnjit Boyal was selected for the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, as the Mustang senior will compete at the national finals in Kentucky on Nov. 18.

The field was announced on NCAA.com following each of the nine regional meets around the country. Louisville will host the 80th annual championships at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park for the third occasion all-time (with the others also taking place recently, in 2012 and 2015).

A Civil Engineering major from Yuba City, Boyal was one of 38 individual qualifiers, and one of four from the West Region — joined by Cal's Trent Brendel and Garrett Corcoran and UC Davis' Tom Madden.

The Men's 10k will now commence at 10:00 a.m. EST Saturday (7:00 in the morning West Coast time — as start times were moved up on Friday due to pending weather expected in the area), with a video broadcast available through FloTrack (commentary by Jared Ward and Kara Goucher) and live results:

Boyal earned USTFCCCA All-Regional status Friday in Seattle, where he finished 10th at the meet hosted by Washington with a 10k performance of 29 minutes, 47.2 seconds — No. 1 among all Big West student-athletes while also competing against runners from around the Pac-12, Mountain West, Big Sky, WCC and WAC.

A four-time Big West Athlete of the Week for his career, Boyal's season started with a win at the UCSB Lagoon Open on Sept. 2, before a 21st-place showing at Oregon's Dellinger Invitational on Sept. 29, and then a runner-up performance at the conference championships on Oct. 28 in Riverside — all of which were 8k events before moving up to the 10k in the postseason.

Top 40 finishers will be All-Americans.

Boyal's qualification marks the 18th season since the fall of 1995 that the program has been represented at NCAAs.

Boyal was named the overall Cal Poly Coca-Cola Student-Athlete of the Week on Nov. 13.

Meanwhile also on Monday, the NCAA announced starting box draws for Louisville. Boyal is assigned to Box 6, opening alongside Boston U. sophomore Paul Luevano (the Patriot League champion), Eastern Michigan senior Hlynur Andresson (the Mid-American Conference champion) and UT-Martin sophomore Edwin Kurgat (the Ohio Valley Conference champion).
