COMPLETE BIG WEST POLL RESULTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Returning nine letterwinners and three all-conference selections from a 2016 squad that won 18 matches, the Cal Poly volleyball program was selected for a second-place finish in the Big West standings this season following the Tuesday release of the conference preseason coaches poll.
Cal Poly, which has finished third in the Big West in each of the last two seasons, received 71 total points and two of the available nine first-place votes to narrowly trail defending champion Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine collected 78 points and six first-place votes.
Long Beach State, last season's Big West runner-up, earned the remaining first-place vote and 65 points. The 49ers were followed by UC Santa Barbara (49 points), UC Irvine (41), UC Davis (39), CSUN (33), UC Riverside (19) and Cal State Fullerton (10).
The Mustangs, whose 37 combined victories during the past two seasons mark the program's highest two-year win total in nine seasons, led the Big West in 2016 in both kills (14.22) and assists (13.46) per set. Comprising Cal Poly's returning All-Big West selections from 2016 are 6-0 senior setter Taylor Nelson, 6-2 senior outside hitter Raeann Greisen and 6-1 junior outside hitter Adlee Van Winden (above). The three other Mustangs to appear in all 99 sets last year are 5-9 junior libero Katherine Brouker, 5-7 sophomore libero Mika Dickson and 6-0 sophomore outside hitter Jessica McRoskey. Cal Poly's remaining returning letterwinners are 6-1 senior middle blocker Savannah Niemen and 6-2 sophomore middle blockers Nikki Jackson and Nadia Retoff.
Cal Poly, which opened its preseason training camp on Tuesday, will enjoy 18 days of preparation prior to the program's Friday, Aug. 25 season-opening matches versus Dayton (8 a.m. PT) and High Point (3:30 p.m.) at the Northern Illinois Holiday Inn Express Invitational.
Cal Poly has won the Big West title on three occasions: 1984, 2006 and 2007.
