Cal Poly Beach Volleyball Goes 2-1 in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO – The Cal Poly beach volleyball team went 2-1 in Sacramento on Saturday, as it swept San Jose State and San Francisco 5-0, and fell to Sacramento state 3-2.

The Mustangs started their first match of the day with a sweep, as the No. 1 pair of Emily Sonny and Hannah Hubbard beat Alli Meehan and Lyndi School 21-10, 21-14,

The No. 2 pair of Taylor Nelson and Adlee Van Winden beat Julie Sam and Nandyla Gana in a three set match, 21-18, 20-22, 15-11, while the No. 3 pair of Brayden Gruenewald and Raeann Greisen pushed Giulia Gayio and Luisa Andrade to three sets and came out with a win, 18-21, 21-18, 15-13. 

Cal Poly's No. 4 pair of Savannah Niemen and Holland Boege took Summer Avery and Jamie Hirai to three sets and came out with a win, 21-16, 20-22, 15-10.

The No. 5 pair of Taylor Gruenewald and Heather Pembroke defeated Julia Golbeck and Kaitlyn Zdraik 21-12, 19-21, 15-5. 

The Mustangs picked up their second sweep of the day after they easily defeated University of San Francisco. 

Sonny and Hubbard beat Nora Buvarplavic and Emily Reed 21-12, 21-15, while Nelson and Van Winden quickly beat Mo Oskam and Camille Aranjo 21-15, 21-14. 

Brayden Gruenewald and Greisen beat Dane Miller and Carly Lowry 17-21, 21-14, 15-5, while Niemen and Boege beat Shannon Levinson and Kate Ashman 21-11, 21-8.

Taylor Gruenewald and Heather Pembroke picked up an easy win over Montana Green and Trish Kuntsanhaus 21-5, 21-7.

Up 2-0 on the day, the Mustangs took on conference opponent Sacramento State, where they put up a fight, but fell 3-2.

Sonny and Hubbard picked up a win against Lexie Skalbeck and Brie Gathright 21-11, 21-16. 

Van Winden and Nelson took Madeline Cannon and Morgan Stanley to three sets and came out with a win 14-21, 21-16, 15-13.

Boege and Greisen were beat by Kennedy Kurtz and Sarah Davis 21-19, 21-14, while Brayden Gruenewald and Niemen were beat by Hannah Meadows and Lana Brown 21-16, 21-14. 

Taylor Gruenewald and Heather Pembroke pushed Brigette Murdock and Courtney Dietrich to three sets but fell short, 12-21, 21-18, 15-10. 

The Mustangs are now 12-19 on the season and 4-6 in conference play. Cal Poly will be back in the sand on Saturday April 22 to take on No. 2 UCLA and No. 1 USC in its last matches of the season before the conference tournament.
