SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly beach volleyball team went 1-1 on its home sand at Pismo Beach Thursday afternoon, as they beat Benedictine University 5-0 and fell to TCU 3-2.
The Mustangs' No. 2 pair of Taylor Nelson and Adlee Van Winden beat Norma Suarez and Courtney Pitts 21-6, 21-4 while Raeann Greisen and Heather Pembroke beat Caitlan Sammons and Lauren Purdy 21-10, 21-7 at the No. 3 spot.
Savannah Niemen and Anna Gorman defeated Cassady Leech and Kassie Renteria 21-6, 21-9 at the No. 4 spot. Dora Bielen and Holland Boege moved up to the No. 5 spot from the exhibition spot and easily beat Ariah Evans and Benesia Rodriguez 21-6, 21-3.
After a quick sweep over Benedictine, the Mustangs started their second match of the day against TCU, where they pushed the Horned Frogs to the end, put couldn't hold on.
Van Winden and Nelson picked up a win over Molly Scheel and Haven Hill at the No. 2 spot 21-16, 21-16, while Greisen and Pembroke beat Jillian Bergeson and Avery Arellano at the No. 3 spot 22-20, 21-19.
Niemen and Gorman pushed Ariah Palter and Sarita Mikals to three sets, but fell short on court four, 21-16, 13-21, 15-9.
Tied at 2-2, the No. 1 pairs were left to clinch the match. Sonny and Hubbard pushed Jaelyn Greene and Amy Neal to three sets but ended up falling 21-18, 14-21, 15-12.
The Mustangs are now 5-7 on the season and will be back in the sand when they head down south to take on Irvine Valley College and Concordia on Friday March 24.
