Cal Poly Men’s Soccer Begins Preseason Camp on Wednesday

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sixteen days out from the Cal Poly men's soccer program's Friday, Aug. 25 season-opening matchup versus Indiana, the Mustangs will begin their 2017 preseason training camp on Wednesday morning.

The Mustangs return six starters from a season ago and welcome 18 newcomers into their preseason camp ahead of the program's annual Green vs. White intrasquad exhibition on Sunday, Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Cal Poly will also host Division II Fresno Pacific in its final tuneup on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 5 p.m. at Paso Robles Horse Park (nearby Paso Robles, Calif.).

Among Cal Poly's returning letterwinners are five of eight goalscorers from a year ago. Among that group are sophomore midfielders Christian Enriquez (above) and Kenneth Higgins (both named to the 2016 Big West Conference All-Freshman Team), junior forward Jared Pressley (who appeared in 15 of 17 games last year and has produced three career goals) and sophomore forward Sebastian Herran (who notched the game-winning goal in Cal Poly's 2-1, season-ending win versus Sacramento State last year).

Up top, senior Adam Olsen notched two assists for Cal Poly in 2016 while fellow forward Kaba Alkebulan – the most experienced player in the Mustang lineup with 51 career appearances – owns six career goals. Limited to just 12 appearances last year through injury, junior forward George Grote requires only six more assists to move into fourth place in program history.

Returning from a defense that set a program record in 2016 by allowing just 71 shots on goal (4.2 per match) are senior Tony Scimeca and junior Nick Carroll. Scimeca, who notched his first career goal last season, started all 15 matches he appeared in during 2016. Carroll also added two assists from the back in 2016 and started during 13 of 17 appearances.

The Mustangs open the 2017 regular season with a two-week, four-match road trip for the second successive season. After beginning the year versus Indiana at Notre Dame's Alumni Stadium, Cal Poly faces the host Fighting Irish (Aug. 27) before visiting Georgetown (Sept. 1) and Maryland (Sept. 4).
