Feature on Matt Imhof to be Aired Thursday Night on Fox Sports West

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Former Cal Poly southpaw Matt Imhof, who served as a volunteer pitching coach with the Mustangs this spring, is the subject of a feature story to be aired on Fox Sports West this week.

The Big West Conference's ESPN3 broadcast crew traveled to San Luis Obispo in late March to interview Imhof, who was forced to quit playing baseball due to a serious eye injury during a workout last summer.

The feature story will be broadcast immediately following Thursday night's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim baseball game, which begins at 7 p.m. The Imhof segment should air sometime between 9:30 and 10 p.m.

Olivia Phelps, Assistant Director of Communications for the Big West Conference, conducted the interview.

Imhof's right eye was removed in late June 2016 following a freak accident during a postgame workout. A pitcher for the Clearwater Threshers in the Florida State League at the time, Imhof was using a rubber resistance band in the workout room of the Brevard County Manatees when the mounted base broke off the band and hit him in the face, fracturing his nose and two orbital bones.

After an initial surgery at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, it was determined that Imhof's right eye needed to be removed and a prosthetic eye was inserted in its place during a second surgery.

Imhof was a pitcher in the minor leagues for three summers after a stellar three-year career at Cal Poly.

Drafted in the second round by the Philadelphia Phillies following Cal Poly's historic 2014 season, Imhof compiled a 10-4 win-loss record as the Friday night starter with a 2.45 ERA. Facing the opposition's best starter each week, Imhof struck out 124 batters in 99 1/3 innings, No. 5 in the nation and best in the Big West.

He broke the school Division I record by striking out 15 Seattle batters in early March. Opponents hit just .195 against Imhof and he had one complete-game shutout (UC Davis) and combined on two other shutouts that season, leading the Mustangs to a 47-12 overall mark, their first Big West title and into the NCAA Division I San Luis Obispo Regional at Baggett Stadium.

A member of USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team in 2013, Imhof was 7-3 with a 2.74 ERA as a sophomore at Cal Poly in 2013. He finished with an 18-7 career mark at Cal Poly with a 2.68 ERA. His 250 career strikeouts is No. 6 all-time at Cal Poly while his 18 wins is tied for No. 10 all-time.

A business administration major at Cal Poly, Imhof is a 2011 graduate of Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, Calif.

The interview will be posted online after it airs on Fox Sports West and a link will be made available here.
