SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- For the second straight week, Cal Poly’s Torrey Van Winden has been named Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week and the overall Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
The sophomore outside hitter (Napa, Calif./Vintage HS) averaged 5.45 kills per set while hitting .353 as the Mustangs posted a 2-1 record at the Nike Classic.
Van Winden totaled 60 kills and just 11 errors in 139 attempts to help Cal Poly defeat Duquesne and No. 23 Wichita State, and compete strongly versus No. 14 Oregon.
She had a career-high 30 kills on .348 hitting in a five-set win over the Shockers. It was the fifth-highest kill total in a match in the country this year. She had nine kills alone in the fourth set. Van Winden added 16 digs for her second double-double of the season.
She tallied 12 kills against the Ducks and notched 18 more against the Dukes. Van Winden hit .425 against Duquesne to go along with four digs and a pair of blocks.
She has recorded double-digit kills in all nine matches this year.
The other Big West weekly honors went to UC Davis’ Malia Bolko (Defensive Player of the Week) and Cal State Fullerton’s Savahna Costello (Freshman of the Week).
This is now the third straight week a Mustang has been named Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week. Torrey’s sister, Adlee Van Winden, received the award in week one.
The Mustangs will continue tournament play away from home this weekend in the Green Bay Country Inn & Suites Classic. They will take on North Dakota and IUPUI on Friday followed by host school Green Bay on Saturday.
