Spencer Howard, RHP, 6-3, 195, Sophomore, Templeton, CA / Templeton High School
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore right-hander Spencer Howard, who pitched seven scoreless innings to lead Cal Poly to its series-clinching victory over Wichita State over the weekend, has been selected as the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
Howard shattered his career high for strikeouts in a game by fanning 11 Shocker batters. Old personal best was seven against Pepperdine a year ago.
Howard earned his first victory of the year and helped Cal Poly notch its first series win of the season. He scattered three hits and issued just one walk.
Howard, who lowered his ERA to 1.27 for the year, posted a 3-1 mark and 2.95 ERA as a redshirt freshman a year ago, striking out 39 batters over 36 2/3 innings. His wins were against UC Irvine, Wichita State and CSU Bakersfield.
Howard is a 2014 graduate of Templeton High School, where he hit .306 and compiled a 7-3 record and 2.20 ERA en route to Los Padres League Most Valuable Pitcher honors. He also was North San Luis Obispo County Player of the Year and a first-team All-San Luis Obispo County selection.
Cal Poly (7-12) hosts Nebraska for a four-game series Thursday through Saturday inside Baggett Stadium.
